Parenting is a divine privilege—a sacred trust bestowed upon us by God to nurture a new life. Modern life brings unprecedented challenges; still, the essential duty of a parent remains unchanged: to help a child flower into a healthy, balanced, compassionate, and wise human being. Sri Ramakrishna often reminded us, ‘The mind is like a lump of clay; you can give it any shape you like.’ Parents are the master-sculptors of this clay. The greatest legacy a parent can bequeath is not just material wealth, but a firm foundation of values, character, and spiritual insight. Enlightened parenting is to recognise the latent divinity within the child and to help manifest it fully.
Parenting has become a great challenge in the modern world, especially in developing countries, where the struggle for existence consumes the major portion of an individualʼs time and energy. But those who aspire for a higher life and have some idea of the values that form the foundation of Indian culture strive to divinise their family and relationships, being enlightened. Every year in December, The Vedanta Kesari brings out a special issue. The December 2025 issue was based on the theme of ‘Enlightened Parenting’. It had contributions from learned monks of the Ramakrishna Order and scholars of Hindu religion and Indian culture. Some sincere devotees who are experienced parents have also contributed to it.
