V edantins consider the phenomenal world to be a product of chit-jada-granthi, somewhat like the juxtaposition of consciousness and matter. But to get at the reality, they reduced both consciousness and matter to the single entity of consciousness. Meanwhile, the materialists tried to reduce them both to just matter. Strangely enough, in recent times scientists of various disciplines have taken up, independently of the Vedantic approach, a serious study of consciousness and its nature. On the other hand, some serious intellectuals are trying to understand the experience of perceiving the Spirit in everything that great souls such as Ramana Maharshi and Sri Ramakrishna had. But there is another point that we must consider. If people are essentially Spirit, why is there this disparity? Why are people not equally happy?
